A Carnatic Music Chitravina recital

N. RAVIKIRANis considered an unprecedented phenomenon in Carnatic music. He was born into a musical family. His grandfather Sri K.S.Narayana Iyengar was a renowned chitravina artiste and his father Sri Narasimham was also a gifted chitravina artist and a vocalist. By the age of three he was able to identify over 325 ragas and 175 talas and by the age of five was already giving three-hour concerts. He switched from vocal music to instrumental when he was ten years old and has gone on to master the Chitravina. He was awarded the A-grade ranking by All India Radio when he was only 15. Ravikiran has performed all over the world at major international festivals including the Autumn Festival of France, Rang Raag Festival,UK, the International Music Festival of Radio France and Festivals of India in France, Germany and Switzerland. He has also toured USA, Canada and South East Asia extensively. He has received many awards including the Best Junior Musician (Music Academy, Madras), Sangeeth Samraat (Wisdom International), Kalaimamani (Tamil Nadu Govt.), Kumar Gandharava Samman (Madhya Pradesh Govt.), Sangeeta Choodamani (Krishna Gana Sabha), Chitravina Gana Varidhi (Yarl Association, Perth, Australia) and Isai Peroli (Karthik Fine Arts). Ravikiran is also an accomplished composer having composed over 200 pieces including the lyrics and music for the dance ballet Lakshmi Prabhavam. His innovations and creations in crossover or fusion works have also won him high acclaim . He has many publications to his credit including his latest book Appreciating Carnatic Music.

A. ANANTHAKRISHNANbelongs to the shishya parampara of Muthuswami Dikshitar – one of the Carnatic Music Trinity. His earliest music training was in vocal music and violin from his father, Vainika Vidwan Sri Anantha Rama Iyer. He gave his first solo performance at the age of eleven and has since accompanied top level musicians including Dr. T. Vishwanathan, D.K. Pattammal, D.K. Jayaraman, K.V. Narayanaswamy, T.N. Seshagopalan, T.N. Sankaranarayan, Chitravina Ravikiran and Nedunuri Krishnamoorthy. He has performed extensively in India, North America and throughout Europe. He has also learnt Hindustani music from Pandit V.G. Jog. Ananthakrishnan lives in New Jersey and teaches music.

MASTER ANANDhad his initial training under his uncle Ramkumar in New Jersey and is being trained by his Guru and grandfather Padmasri Palghat R. Raghu. He gave his first concert at the age of 8 at the Thyagaraja festival in New Jersey. He has since participated in music festivals in India and USA and has accompanied seniors artists such as Prof. T.N. Krishnan, Palghat Sri K.V. Narayanaswami, Dr. N. Ramani, M.S. Gopalakrishnan, Mandolin U. Srinivas, Chitravina Ravikiran, Sanjay Subramanyan among others. He is a recipient of several awards including the Bala Nandi title given by Padmabhushan Smt. Kamala, the Talent Promotion Award for Mridangam at the Narada Gana Sabha and the Best Junior Mridangist award at the Madras Music Academy. Anand is a ninth grader at the Ranney School in New Jersey and also represents his school in tennis and basketball.

  1. Travelling on I-76 ( Schuylkill Expressway ) exit onto I-476 North; follow directions in (3).
  2. From Delaware, take I-95 North and exit onto I-476 North and follow directions in (3).
  1. Travelling North on I-476 (Blue Route) take exit 9 for Germantown Pike West. Go west on Germantown Pike to Route 202. Turn right on Route 202 (202N) and go past Route 73. College is half mile to the right. For the parking lot drive up to Morris Road on 202. Make a right on to Morris and then right into the college parking lot.
  1. Travelling on I-276 ( Penna. Turnpike) take exit 25 (Norristown Exit). After the toll booths take the left ramp to Plymouth Road. At the traffic light turn left on Plymouth Road and turn right at the next light to go west on Germantown Pike. On Germantown Pike follow directions in (3).
